Puntellare.

A new way of communicating disasters based on better understanding and critique of what I call ‘synthetic empathy’ is needed. My project addresses the 2009 earthquakes in L’Aquila, Italy, to illustrate the tensions in how we frame a disaster.

Unstable Ground.

A collaboration between Jack Wild and myself, Unstable Ground is an interactive exhibition installation exploring the interconnected stories of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake in Italy. Minds eye.

The artist’s narrative, I believe, is just as important as the artworks themselves. Minds Eye enables the visitors to experience the darkness that Degas fell into during his macular degeneration, as well as the illumination and sensitivity to it within his work. This installation concept was created for the Courtauld Gallery.

When Disaster Strikes.

The nature of relief design involves a boundary between the design process and the area of its use. This disconnection between these two features can pose a negative distraction for the whole intention. The sensitivity of the whole idea can be mistranslated by differing approaches.

Horaikan Trail.

I was given a brief to create tsunami escape routes on the coast of Kamaishi, Japan, and to co-design with the local community. The intention was to remove the morbid associations and to create a nature trail with respect to the memory of those that lost their lives.
